Universiti Malaysia Terengganu was founded in Mengabang Telipot, Kuala Terengganu, as the Universiti Pertanian Malaysia's Centre for Fisheries and Marine Science. It provided space for students and instructors in the Fisheries and Marine Science programmes to conduct practical sessions as well as research. The Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science of the Universiti Pertanian Malaysia (UPM) at Serdang was eventually relocated to Kuala Terengganu, and the Centre was renamed Universiti Pertanian Malaysia Terengganu (UPMT) in June 1996. The faculty's name has also been altered to the Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology. The Matriculation Centre and the Faculty of Science and Professional Literature were also established.

On May 5, 1999, the Malaysian Cabinet approved the formation of Terengganu University College (KUT) as a UPM affiliate campus. On May 1, 2001, Terengganu Universiti College was granted autonomy, and on June 20, 2001, it was renamed the Malaysian Science and Technology University College (KUSTEM). KUSTEM was elevated to the status of a complete university on February 1, 2007, and with that elevation, it was called Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, which it retains to this day. UMT is in Kuala Terengganu, on the coast of the South China Sea, not far from Lake Kenyir, Southeast Asia's largest man-made lake. UMT is a prominent public university in a number of specialised subjects, including oceanography and marine science, due to its strategic position. UMT is a teaching and learning institution with a tranquil environment, experienced staff, and a welcoming community. UMT has been and continues to aim for excellence in the domains of sciences, technology, and natural resource management in terms of research. In marine studies, economics, management, basic sciences, physical sciences, engineering, and computing, UMT enhances its prospects, scope, and research activities.

Senior researchers' achievements and honours at national and international exhibits and research competitions demonstrate that these disciplines of study were recognised. UMT's slogan, Ocean of Discoveries, accurately represents how UMT's innovative initiatives satisfy the nation's goals.

Residential College (KK) is one of the management components in student development which is responsible for managing the placement and facilities of students to create a comfortable and safe living environment. The rebranding of Student Colleges to Residential Colleges (KK) has begun on 20 August 2020 where this branding is in line with the proposal of the top leadership led by the Director of Residential Colleges, namely Ts. Dr. Nik Aziz Bin Nik Ali and assisted by the Deputy Director of Campus Dr. Zarihan Binti Abdul Halim and the Deputy Director of Off Campus, Dr. Izan Binti Jaafar. Therefore, the Residential College has been entrusted to play an important role as a second learning center for students staying at the Residential College. The Residential College is divided into two important sections, namely the Administration, Finance & Off -Campus Section and the In -Campus Residential College. The Residential College will always ensure the welfare and safety of students is a priority so that students are comfortable in undergoing learning sessions at the Residential College.
